An Overview of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority was founded in 1908 on the campus of Howard University in Washington, DC.  The small group of women who organized the sorority was just one generation removed from slavery.   However, they were resolute in making their college experiences meaningful and productive.  It was through that determination that Alpha Kappa Alpha was founded.  The sorority's influence extend beyond college campuses, and its legacy of service continues, rather than ends with college graduation.  With more than 1000 chapters and over 300,000 members (graduate and undergraduate), Alpha Kappa Alpha's mission is to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, to promote unity and friendship among college women, to study and help alleviate problems concerning girls and women in order to improve their social stature, to maintain a progressive interest in college life, and to be of "Service to all Mankind."
